Barcode Verification

Some of the larger retail companies require bar code verification for every product on their shelves. A verification report is simply a test scan of the barcode image. The barcode is given a grade depending on how easy it is for scanning machines to read it (a pass grade is A, B, C or D).  Verification is usually done on the final printed barcode image (on the product label or packaging).

Our verification reports are done to internationally recognized standards and use the highest quality verification technology. If your retailer requires barcode verification, please order a verification report for your barcode here:

email_wysiwyg: The barcode verification test is done by an independent GS1-accredited company. It is a test scan of the as-printed barcode and gives a report on how well the barcode scans. The report results range from A (an excellent pass) to D (just pass) or Fail. If the barcode fails, the report shows why it has failed – this can be due to things such as insufficient white space either side of the barcode, ink spread, wrong barcode size etc. In order to complete the verification test, you need to send us a copy of your product artwork showing the barcode number.  The best thing to send us is an as-printed copy of your actual packaging, so we can test exactly what will be supplied to retailers. (Supermarkets and hardware chains that require verification reports want the test done on your as-printed packaging). Alternatively, you can send us a copy of your artwork design – preferably a high quality printed version, or if necessary a pdf. (If you send us a pdf, we get a high quality copy made at our local printer – these are usually very good, but it is introducing a variable that is outside your control). Please send any physical sample to our office address Barcodes Ltd, 2C Handley Ave, Devonport, Auckland 0624, New Zealand, and let us know by email when you have sent it.

“What do I do next?”

If you have ordered a verification report from us, then the next step is to send us a copy of your barcode image (preferably a physical copy rather than a digital image). Please post the printed barcode (on its label or packaging) to us for verification (see our postal address).

Just over ten percent of the bar codes we get verified for our customers fail their report – therefore, if you are getting your bar code verified, it is important to make sure that your barcode complies with the information listed in the following two links:
1. The official barcode standards
2. How to pass barcode verification

NOTE: There is one company that we know of in the world that will not accept our verification reports – Woolworths Australia (they will only accept verification reports done by GS1-Australia). Other than that, we have not had any problems anywhere in the world with our verification reports being accepted by retail companies.

Additional Information About Verification:

A Barcode Verifier

A bar code verifier machine is different from a barcode scanner. It is a precision machine capable of estimating how easily the bar code will be read by most scanners in retail shops. The verifier machine produces a report which indicates whether or not the barcode is likely to be easily read by scanners. If the barcode failed verification, the report will also include information about how to improve the quality of the barcode (so that next time it passes verification!)

Barcode scanners vary widely in how accurate they are. In general, the more expensive the barcode scanner, the more accurate it is – therefore, some high quality barcode scanners may be able to accurately read poor quality barcodes even if the barcodes have failed verification.
