Barcodes are a visual representation of numbers. Each part of the number is translated into a vertical black bar image. When the barcode image is scanned, the comic number will appear on a retailer’s checkout screen. After you give your comic to your retailer, they will scan your barcode and then enter the product details into their system. This will connect your barcode to your comic. After that, when your barcode is scanned, the comic name and price will appear on the checkout screen
What barcode format to use on comics
Comics use a 12 digit UPC-A code with a 5 digit supplement. The barcode is then printed on the front cover of the comic.
How is a UPC number turned into a 15 digit barcode for comics?
UPCs are 12 digits. The first 11 digits are encoded the last digit being a check-digit. Then five digits are encoded into a second set of bars on the right side. These final 5 digits identify the issue, cover and printing of the comic.
Traditional or Extended formats
Traditional – III C P
In traditional format, since 2009, the extended UPC data for comic book barcodes has been structured to include information about the Issue, Cover, and Printing. In this system, the first three digits represent the issue number of the comic series, with the first issue of a series being designated as 001. The fourth digit indicates the cover, with the first cover assigned a value of 1. The fifth digit represents the printing, with the first printing being marked as 1 in that position of the extended barcode.
Extended Cover – II CC P
With the increase in multiple covers and the frequent renumbering of series, some publishers adopted a new format for the extended barcode, using Issue, Issue, Cover, Cover, Printing. In this format, the first issue of a series is represented by 01 in the first two digits. The first cover is indicated by 01 in the third and fourth digits, and the first printing is represented by 1 in the fifth digit position of the extended barcode.
